Vanderwende’s Ice Cream – the family-owned, farm-fresh, locally sourced ice cream brand will officially open the doors of its first Pennsylvania location in Philadelphia on Wednesday, June 29th. The Delaware-based farm is brining all 32 homemade flavors to Philadelphia. Spearheading Vanderwende’s first location out of state, Will Vanderwende, the third-generation owner and youngest of three sons, is bringing the family recipe to new heights this summer.

“I chose to expand our family business into Philadelphia because I found myself here a lot as a student at the University of Delaware. I decided opening a store of my own was the right move for me months before graduation. After touring vacant commercial spaces all over Philadelphia, I knew when I found Old City it was the perfect spot,” says Will Vanderwende, Owner, Vanderwende’s Ice Cream Philadelphia.

Since 1954, the Vanderwenede family has owned and operated Vanderwende’s Farms in Bridgeville, Delaware. Looking to ensure the utmost quality ice cream is served daily, Vanderwende’s Ice Cream in Old City receives multiple shipments a week directly from the Delaware farm.

With only six cows and $35, William and Ellen Vanderwende purchased the farm in 1954, and have since expanded the family business to Philadelphia. The farm has since grown to almost 4,000 acres and more than 225 registered Holstein cows, which are milked twice a day. The farm sits alongside Route 404, near some of the region’s famous beaches: Lewes, Rehoboth, Dewey, Bethany, Fenwick and Ocean City.

The Vanderwende family takes great pride in producing top-quality milk, while also maintaining the land where the farm was built. The Vanderwende family uses many sustainable environmental practices such as cover crop and nutrient management programs to ensure the farm is resource-efficient and environmentally conscious.

Vanderwende’s farm-fresh, premium ice cream is available in cups and cones. Milkshakes, root beer floats, sundaes, ice cream tacos, pints, quarts and vegan soft serve will be available at the Old City shop. Vanderwende’s Ice Cream, located in Old City at 243 Market Street, will be open 7 days a week from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm.
