Order What You Want and Pay What You Wish as Post Haste Celebrates Global Pay What You Can Day
Restaurants around the world will take part in the inaugural Global Pay What You Can Day on Wednesday, August 26, inviting guests to order what they’d like and pay what they can. Post Haste, located in East Kensington, is the only Philadelphia restaurant participating.
The initiative was launched by Mexico City restaurant Masala y MaÃz and has since expanded to restaurants across the United States, Mexico, India, Turkey, Cuba, Colombia, Spain and other countries. Participating restaurants span cities including New York, Austin, New Orleans, Mumbai, Istanbul, Havana and Bogotá, each adopting a shared pay-what-you-can model for the day. Organizers describe the effort as part of a broader movement to make hospitality more welcoming and accessible.
On August 26, guests at Post Haste can order from the menu and pay what they are able to, with no minimums or qualifications required. Alcohol is excluded from the pay-what-you-can pricing.
Post Haste has already established a weekly pay-what-you-can program earlier this year, making it Philadelphia’s only ongoing offering of its kind. Chef Ari Miller said he was drawn to join the global initiative after collaborating with Telly Justice of HAGS in New York, whose work on equitable hospitality connected him to the movement.
Organizers of Global Pay What You Can Day frame the event as a response to rising dining costs, which have made eating out less accessible for many people. The initiative aims to create a shared dining experience while promoting an alternative model for restaurant hospitality.
