Joe Hisaishi Returns to Conduct The Philadelphia Orchestra in Two-Night Concert Series at Marian Anderson Hall

The Philadelphia Orchestra welcomes back the legendary Joe Hisaishi for two special performances on November 13 and 14, at Marian Anderson Hall, following his sold-out concerts earlier this year. Widely regarded as one of the most beloved and influential film composers of his generation, Hisaishi will once again take the podium to lead the Orchestra through a symphonic journey inspired by the world of Studio Ghibli.

Known for his signature blend of cinematic grandeur and emotional depth, Joe Hisaishi has scored more than 100 films and earned seven Japanese Academy Awards for Best Music. His decades-long collaboration with acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki has produced some of the most iconic soundtracks in modern cinema, including My Neighbor TotoroPrincess MononokeSpirited Away, and most recently, The Boy and the Heron, which won the 2024 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Tickets are available at philorch.ensemblearts.org.

During his June visit, Hisaishi described the Philadelphia Orchestra’s sound as “as smooth and rich as fine wine,” and his return this fall promises another spellbinding experience for audiences.

A Concert That Brings Ghibli’s Magic to Life

The program will showcase two of Hisaishi’s most celebrated works reimagined for the symphonic stage:

  • Symphonic Suite from Castle in the Sky – A breathtaking adaptation of Miyazaki’s 1986 adventure film, transforming its soaring melodies and emotional themes into a full orchestral suite filled with drama, warmth, and wonder.
  • Symphonic Variation “Merry-Go-Round” – A lush reworking of the beloved waltz from Howl’s Moving Castle, this piece expands the original theme into a powerful and richly textured symphonic form, highlighting the elegance and whimsy that define Hisaishi’s signature style.

Each composition offers a rare opportunity to experience the music of Studio Ghibli outside the cinema — performed live by one of the world’s most distinguished orchestras under the baton of the composer himself.
