Hammy’s Heart supports families with children battling life-threatening illnesses
Casey Cares Foundation, a non-profit charity that provides uplifting and ongoing programs with a special touch to critically ill children and their families throughout the Mid-Atlantic area, has introduced its newest program, “Hammy’s Heart”. This initiative offers struggling families grocery store gift cards to assist them with food bills while they are caring for a child battling a life-threatening illness.
The program was created in memory of Casey Cares child Abraham “Hammy” Scrivner, who lost his three-year battle to brain cancer this past May. Gina T, Hammy’s mother, understands the overwhelming financial responsibilities of caring for a critically ill child and has opted to create a program that will fulfill Hammy’s last desire: to provide families loving meals together.
“When your child is affected with a life-threatening illness like Hammy, you devote all your time to his medical care,” said Gina T, Hammy’s mother. “I want other families to have the means to feed all their loved ones, even after having to quit full time jobs like I had to do.”
Gina said she chose Casey Cares Foundation because Casey and all the staff genuinely loved Hammy, and brought him nothing but smiles the entire time he battled his illness. While involved with Casey Cares Foundation, Hammy was able to spend a day with players from the Baltimore Orioles and also took part in a photo shoot with Under Armour, where he met CEO Kevin Plank. “Casey Cares Foundation created many memories for my children that I would not have had because I could not afford it,” Gina said. “Starting the Hammy’s Heart program is just one small way that I’m trying to give back.”
Hammy’s Heart joins a lineup of six enriching programs provided by Casey Cares Foundation including Family Festivities, Celebration Vacations, Birthday Blasts, Kami’s Jammies, Caring Connection group parties and Better Together.
