Dining Under the Shambles Returns to the South Street Headhouse District Featuring On-Street Dining
The South Street Headhouse District is bringing back Dining Under The Shambles. Every Thursday through Sunday (and summer holiday Mondays) until October 30, 2022, from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., South Street will close the southbound lane of 2nd Street between Lombard and Pine Streets for on-street and outdoor dining. Five restaurants will share the historic space and use it as additional outdoor dining for their patrons. The restaurants participating are Bistro Romano, Pizzeria Stella, Bloomsday Cafe, Xochitl, and Malbec Argentinean Steakhouse.
The South Street Headhouse District started the outdoor dining program in the spring of 2020 as a response to the City shutting down indoor dining due to Covid-19. It was created as a tool to sustainably support their restaurants. Once the City lifted the emergency declaration at the end of December 2021, Dining Under The Shambles took a break as indoor dining became available again. The community ended up loving the European feel that dining under the Headhouse Shambles simulated so South Street knew they had to bring back this incredible dining experience.
The Shambles were built in 1745 as a marketplace for merchants to sell goods. In 1805, the Headhouse was built and used as a fire engine house and was home to a bell that rang on Sundays to announce the opening of the market. Now, it is home to farmers’ markets, weddings, special events, and outdoor dining. With lights draped across the top, it gives the feeling of dining under the stars.
