Day of the Dead Returns to 9th Street With Parade, Live Music, Art, and Cultural Celebration

On Sunday November 2, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Philly’s iconic South 9th Street will transform into a vibrant stage for the annual Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) celebration presented by the Association of Mexican Business Owners of Philadelphia. The free, family-friendly event will bring together community, culture, and tradition in one of the city’s most cherished cultural corridors.

At the heart of this year’s celebration is a moving altar on Washington Avenue, designed by artist Claudia Peregrina (@peregrinarey), dedicated to honoring migrants who have passed away in the United States. The altar serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience, sacrifice, and stories of those who came before us, while welcoming the living to reflect, celebrate, and remember.

Entertainment and Activities

The event promises a full day of music, art, and festivities for all ages:

  • Bike Parade in collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Center (@mccphilly)

  • Aztec Dancers showcasing powerful traditional performances

  • Live Mariachi music by Mariachi Villaseñor (@mariachi4you)

  • Three DJs spinning throughout the day to keep the energy alive

  • Catrinas in traditional dress, guided by artist Julieta Zavala (@julietazavalay)

  • Free face painting for kids and families

  • Mexican vendors offering food, crafts, and cultural goods

“The Day of the Dead celebration on S 9th Street in Philadelphia is a vibrant testament to the power of multiculturalism and community. This event is more than just a festivity; it’s a profound cultural experience that honors the lives of those who have passed, particularly migrants, through rich traditions, art, and music. In a city as diverse as Philadelphia, celebrating Day of the Dead allows us to embrace and share the beauty of Mexican heritage, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our collective cultural tapestry. It’s an opportunity for everyone to come together, remember loved ones, and experience the joyous spirit of this cherished tradition,” stated AEM’ Gerardo Coronado
