The 21st Annual Danny Rumph Classic Featuring Top Basketball Talent for a Great Cause
The 21st Annual Danny Rumph Classic will take place Thursday, August 6, through Monday, August 10, at Drexel University’s Daskalakis Athletic Center, located at 3301 Market Street in Philadelphia. The tournament is hosted by the Daniel E. Rumph II Foundation and presented by Nike.
The event raises awareness of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which organizers describe as the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young people. The tournament includes elite men’s and women’s basketball competition, youth showcases and community programming.
The Classic was founded by Danny Rumph’s mother, Viola “Candy” Owens, in honor of her son, who died at age 21. Organizers noted this year’s 21st anniversary holds particular significance given Rumph’s age at the time of his death. Over its history, the tournament has featured appearances from NBA players including James Harden, Tyrese Maxey, Jayson Tatum and Jalen Brunson.
