North Broad Renaissance Invites Volunteers to ‘A Broader Green’ Earth Day Service Project, Featuring Complimentary Lunch and Drinks
In celebration of Earth Day, North Broad Renaissance is calling on community members to roll up their sleeves and take part in “A Broader Green: An Earth Day Service Project,” returning on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Now in its ninth year, the annual day of service will bring volunteers together to help transform more than a mile of North Broad Street—from Spring Garden Street to Poplar Street—through planting, public art, and neighborhood beautification efforts.
Volunteers will spend the day planting red, white, and blue flowers, creating a new fence mural, and preparing the corridor for the upcoming spring season and Philadelphia’s 250th celebrations.
“Broader Green is about more than planting flowers—it’s about showing the importance of green space in urban neighborhoods,” said Shalimar Thomas. “Each year, our volunteers come together to make North Broad a healthier, more vibrant corridor, and this year we are continuing the tradition by tying it into the 250th celebrations along the corridor.”
The initiative is part of North Broad Renaissance’s Open and Green Space Program, which focuses on enhancing public spaces along urban corridors. By combining landscaping, art, and community engagement, the program highlights how accessible green space can:
- Improve environmental quality
- Create more welcoming, walkable neighborhoods
- Strengthen community connections
- Enhance everyday quality of life
This year’s project also plays a key role in preparing North Broad Street as a gateway corridor for visitors and residents ahead of the citywide semiquincentennial celebrations.
Volunteer Experience and Perks
Participants of all ages are encouraged to join the hands-on effort, whether as individuals, families, or part of local organizations.
Volunteers will also receive:
- Complimentary beverages from Starbucks and The Daily coffee shop
- Lunch provided by Santucci’s Original Square Pizza
Beyond the perks, the event offers a meaningful opportunity to connect with neighbors while contributing to a visible, lasting impact on the community.
