Johnny Rockets Closes After 20 Years of Business on South Street

Entering into Johnny Rockets felt like you just stepped out of a DeLorean after pushing it to 88 mph.  The throwback diner harkens back to a world of hula skirts, saddle shoes, and cardigan letterman sweaters.  It wasn’t “Philly” yet it became part of the South Street landscape.  Now after 20 years of business the Johnny Rockets on the corner of 5th & South is no more.

The days of employees breaking out into song and dance are long gone.  Although the food was solid but nothing to really write home about, it does feel like a small piece of South St. died today.  According to reports the franchise owners and property owners just couldn’t come eye-to-eye with lease terms.

Now the milkshakes have stopped flowing and the last white apron has been hung.  With such prime space in the heart of South Street, it will be interesting to see what will take its place.
