In Celebration of Black History Month, Mom Mom’s Soul Food Pop-Up is Returning to The Dutch

It’s becoming a tradition at The Dutch (1537 S 11th St.) right off East Passyunk. The the past couple of years, Chef Kevin Watters has curated a special soul food menu for his Mom Mom’s Soul Food pop-up in celebration of Black History Month.

Now Chef Watters looks to continue this legacy with another Mon Mom’s Soul Food pop-up on Monday February 19th with a portion of the proceeds benefitting local, BIPOC-owned and chef-led charity,Everybody Eats.

West Philadelphia native Kevin Watters has been the chef at The Dutch since April 2016, cranking out Pennsylvania Dutch classics to locals and tourists at the bustling South Philly café which now resides along East Passyunk Avenue, a move from its original location in Pennsport in March of 2022. For the fourth year in a row, Watters is reviving the culinary event as a nod to Black History Month, named in remembrance of his late grandmother Lillian Lewis, who was known in her community as “everybody’s Mom-Mom”.

The once takeaway-only pop-up is now presented in the form of a multi-course sit down dinner at The Dutch on Monday, February 19 with two seatings only at 6PM and 8PM. Priced at $75 per

“Hosting Mom Mom’s Soul Food Pop-Up is something we look forward to every year here at The Dutch as it allows us to give back to the community and also pay tribute to my grandmother who was very influential in not only my day-to-day, but also my career as a chef,” said Watters. “Our goal this year is to showcase our dinner and bar program by hosting fun and meaningful dinners and events such as this one.”

Watters and The Dutch are contributing a percentage of sales to Everybody Eats, a BIPOC-owned and chef-driven local nonprofit organization. The West Philadelphia-based food drive’s mission is to nourish hungry people and lead the community in the fight against hunger.
