Want to Watch National Treasure at Independence Mall? Now You Can With the New Outdoor Movie Series “Movies on The Mall”
Ever wanted to watch National Treasure with Independence Hall as the backdrop? Well, now you can because The Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation (“the Visitor Center”) and Independence Historical Trust (“the Trust”) are collaborating to produce “Movies on The Mall,” an outdoor movie series celebrating the themes and history connected to Independence National Historical Park.
The monthly series will begin on Friday August 30, 2024, screening “National Treasure” at 7:30 p.m. As you already know, this classic flick includes scenes set and filmed in Old City and throughout Philly, including at Independence Hall, The Liberty Bell, Reading Terminal Market, City Hall, Old Pine Street Presbyterian Church, and the Franklin Institute.
September’s “Movies on the Mall” night will feature a screening of “The Patriot.” The 2000 film tells the story of an American soldier’s journey in the American Revolution. A family-friendly edit of The Patriot is suitable for most audiences.
In addition to the film screenings, the Visitor Center and the Trust will host family-friendly activities starting at 5:00 p.m. Attendees will be able to enjoy historical 18th Century games, participate in a National Treasure-style scavenger hunt, take part in family friendly arts and crafts, and enjoy refreshments from the Liberty Garden beer garden on Independence Mall.
“As one of America’s most iconic public spaces, Independence Mall is a perfect setting for neighbors to come together to enjoy family-friendly movies like National Treasure and The Patriot under the stars,” said Kathryn Ott Lovell, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation. “The Visitor Center is honored to partner with Independence National Historical Park and The Independence Historical Trust to activate the Mall in new ways that enrich visitors’ knowledge of history and connection with each other.”
“The Independence Historical Trust is excited for Philadelphians to experience their National Park in a whole new way in our first-ever Movies on the Mall series,” said Thomas A. Caramanico, Executive Director of Independence Historical Trust “There is no place quite like Independence National Historical Park to immerse yourself in the cinematic retelling of revolutionary America’s history and lore!”
Screens will be set up outside Independence Visitor Center facing 5th Street between Market Street and Arch Street. Attendees are welcome to bring blankets, chairs, food and drinks to enjoy during the screenings. Alcohol is prohibited outside of Liberty Garden.
This program is FREE and open to the public. However, organizers are asking attendees to register ahead of time at support.inht.org/event/movies-on-the-mall/e607696
