After Being Gone For More Than a Decade, The Schmitter Is Coming Back to Citizens Bank Park
Philly has no shortage of iconic foods, but few carry the kind of legacy that the Schmitter does. After more than a decade away, the legendary cheesesteak-salami sandwich is officially returning to Citizens Bank Park, and the timing couldn’t be more fitting.
Created and made famous by McNally’s Tavern in Chestnut Hill, the Schmitter will be back on the menu at the ballpark beginning with MLB All-Star Week events — and will remain available through the end of the Phillies’ season.
The sandwich first arrived at Citizens Bank Park in 2004 at the personal request of late Phillies Chairman David Montgomery, whose family lived near the beloved Chestnut Hill tavern. It quickly became a ballpark staple and fan favorite before disappearing from the lineup in 2015 — leaving a very specific, very delicious hole in the hearts of Phillies fans ever since.
Now, as Major League Baseball turns its national spotlight on Philadelphia, the Schmitter is making its long-awaited homecoming. For those unfamiliar, the Schmitter is a masterpiece of simplicity: a cheesesteak topped with salami, tomato, fried onions, and a special sauce, served on a Kaiser roll. It’s the kind of sandwich that inspires genuine loyalty — the kind Philadelphians have been talking about bringing back for years.
The family behind McNally’s Tavern has been serving the Schmitter for decades, keeping the recipe and the tradition alive in Chestnut Hill while fans waited patiently for its return to the ballpark. Now that wait is finally over.
Whether you’re heading to an All-Star Week event or catching a regular season game later this summer, add the Schmitter to your order. Philadelphia’s most iconic sandwich is back where it belongs — and this time, savor every bite.
