Brauhaus Schmitz Maifest Returns to South Street With German Food, Beer, Live Music, and PA’s Tallest Maypole

One of South Street’s most beloved spring traditions is back as Brauhaus Schmitz hosts its 13th Annual Maifest on Saturday, May 2, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The 700 block of South Street will be shut down for the all-day, all-ages celebration, transforming the corridor into a lively German-style festival filled with food, beer, music, and cultural traditions—including Pennsylvania’s tallest Maypole.

Rooted in the German celebration of May Day, Maifest marks the arrival of spring with a high-energy block party that draws more than 10,000 attendees each year. The event blends authentic cultural elements with a festive, neighborhood feel—making it a staple on Philly’s spring calendar.

“Our block party has become a cherished tradition for locals and visitors alike,” said owner Doug Hager. “Come raise a liter with us under the giant Maypole.”

From live entertainment to interactive competitions, the day is packed with activities:

Live Music (2 p.m. – 6 p.m.)
Enjoy traditional oompah tunes and party favorites from Die Heimatklange Band.

Cultural Performances
The United German Hungarian Dance Group will perform traditional folk dances around the towering Maypole.

Liter Lift Competition (1 p.m.)
Watch competitors test their strength by holding a full liter of beer the longest for a chance to qualify for the national championship in New York City.

Keg Tapping (1:30 p.m.)
Join the Brauhaus team as they officially kick off the festivities with a ceremonial keg tapping.

Festivalgoers can expect a full lineup of classic German fare, including:

  • Pig roast
  • Bratwurst
  • Pretzels
  • Schnitzel
  • Sauerkraut
  • Potato salad

To wash it all down, there will be 10+ German beers on tap, featuring lagers, wheat beers, pilsners, cider, and even shareable Schnapsski shots.

Maifest isn’t just for beer lovers—there’s plenty for all ages, including:

  • Face painting
  • Flower crown making
  • Games and activities
  • Dancing and live entertainment
