Vientiane Bistro Is Hosting “Adventurous Eats” — A Halloween Dining Experience for the Brave Featuring Worms, Frogs, Blood Salad, & More

Philly’s most daring dinner event returns this Halloween as Vientiane Bistro hosts the 10th Annual Adventurous Eats on October 30, at 7:00 p.m. The Laos restaurant, located at 2537 Kensington Avenue, invites fearless food lovers to test their limits — and their stomachs — during a one-of-a-kind BYOB dining experience that celebrates cultural authenticity through bold, unconventional dishes.

Now in its tenth year, Adventurous Eats has built a cult following among diners eager to step outside their comfort zone. Priced at $75 per person, the multi-course meal is designed to challenge expectations with ingredients that range from curious to downright shocking — think bugs, organ meats, and unique textures that may make even the most experienced foodie hesitate.

“This dinner was inspired by a loyal customer who once asked, ‘What’s mom cooking back there?’” recalls owner Sonny Phanthavong. “It turned out she was enjoying a bowl of vermicelli noodle soup with organ meat and silk worms. That moment sparked the idea for Adventurous Eats — a way to share the dishes we grew up with, even if they seem strange to some.”

Each year, guests approach the event with a mix of excitement and nerves, knowing that what’s served will be equal parts flavorful and fearless. “Guests can expect to be grossed out, anxious, squeamish, or even walk out — though that’s only happened once,” laughs Phanthavong. “We welcome everyone into our home with open minds and open hearts. It’s about experiencing our culture authentically.”

Menu Includes:
  • Silk worm
  • Balut
  • Blood salad
  • Crispy whole frog
  • Chicken hearts spicy stir fry
  • Googly eyes lychee sago dessert

Beyond the shock factor, Adventurous Eats is rooted in storytelling, family tradition, and the idea of breaking bread across cultures. Each dish offers insight into Laotian heritage and culinary philosophy — a mix of resourceful cooking and respect for every ingredient.

The event is BYOB and encourages guests to come with an open mind (and perhaps an empty stomach). Seating is limited, and reservations are highly recommended.
