Think You Have a Green Thumb? PHS Launches New Citywide Gardening Challenge as Part of 2026 Garden Season
PHS Garden Season 2026 is launching a region-wide initiative designed to encourage residents to get outside, grow something new, and connect through gardening.
Leading this year’s programming is the debut of the Citywide Gardening Challenge, a new season-long initiative celebrating outdoor home gardens throughout Philadelphia.
The challenge invites residents to showcase their creativity and environmental stewardship by submitting their home gardens for recognition and prizes, while also receiving gardening support and educational resources throughout the growing season.
A New Citywide Gardening Challenge
The inaugural challenge is open to a wide variety of outdoor gardens, including:
- Front porch container gardens
- Backyard vegetable plots
- Pollinator-friendly landscapes
- Community-inspired green spaces
Throughout the season, registered participants will receive:
- Gardening tips and resources
- Educational guidance from PHS experts
- Photography support for submissions
- Opportunities to compete for awards and prizes
The challenge will conclude with a finalist celebration event in September.
According to PHS President Matt Rader, the goal of Garden Season is to encourage residents to connect with both nature and their communities.
“Gardening brings people together in a way few other activities can,” said Rader. “PHS Garden Season is an invitation to get outside, learn by doing, and experience the joy of growing in your own community.”
He added that the Citywide Gardening Challenge highlights the dedication people bring to caring for the places where they live while helping create healthier neighborhoods across Philadelphia.
Beyond the challenge itself, PHS Garden Season includes a wide variety of programs and experiences designed for gardeners of all skill levels.
Programming throughout the season includes:
- Hands-on gardening workshops
- Volunteer opportunities
- Public gardens and landscapes to explore
- Seasonal events and educational activities
The initiative is aimed at helping both new and experienced gardeners deepen their connection to gardening while learning sustainable practices and community-building through green spaces.
For nearly two centuries, PHS has played a major role in shaping Philadelphia’s green spaces and gardening culture.
Through community greening programs, public gardens, educational initiatives, and volunteer efforts, the organization continues to focus on:
- Expanding access to green spaces
- Improving neighborhood health and wellness
- Supporting environmental sustainability
- Building stronger communities through gardening
