Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival Returns With New Lantern Displays, Live Performances, and Cultural Experiences

The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival will once again light up Franklin Square as it returns this summer and will run June 5 through August 16.

This year’s festival celebrates the Year of the Horse, symbolizing energy, freedom, passion, and transformation, with all-new illuminated installations, live cultural performances, food, interactive activities, and immersive experiences throughout the historic park.

Visitors can expect glowing landscapes filled with towering handcrafted lantern sculptures made from steel frames and vibrant silk, continuing the centuries-old Chinese lantern tradition while incorporating themes inspired by Philly’s major international events taking place this summer.

Festival organizers say every lantern installation this year will be brand new, including several one-of-a-kind displays celebrating Philadelphia’s global spotlight in 2026.

The event blends traditional Chinese artistry with:

  • Animals and floral themes
  • International cultural influences
  • Sports and global connection-inspired lanterns
  • Large-scale illuminated sculptures

The lanterns officially come to life each evening at sunset, transforming Franklin Square into a glowing outdoor art experience.

In addition to the lantern displays, guests can enjoy:

  • Live stage performances
  • Cultural demonstrations
  • A choreographed fountain and light show at the Rendell Family Fountain
  • Weekend Cultural Connections programming

Opening weekend performances begin on the festival stage at 7:30 p.m., followed by the fountain show at 8 p.m.

  • Asian cuisine
  • American comfort food
  • Signature cocktails in the Cocktail Garden

Visitors can also enjoy discounted access to:

  • Philly Mini Golf
  • Parx Liberty Carousel

The event extends the ongoing 20th anniversary season celebration of Franklin Square.

New and returning this year are Cultural Connections, immersive experiences taking place Friday through Sunday evenings and included with festival admission.
