The World’s First Modern Graffiti Writer, Darryl ‘Cornbread’ McCray, Is Hosting a Solo Exhibit at Paradigm Gallery + Studio
Philly’s art and hip-hop history takes center stage as Darryl “Cornbread” McCray, the world’s first modern graffiti artist, returns to his hometown with CORNBREAD: LEGENDARY, a major solo exhibition at Paradigm Gallery + Studio (12 N. 3rd St). On view from January 16 through February 15, 2026, the exhibition marks McCray’s largest solo presentation in Philadelphia to date—bringing his global legacy back to the city where it all began.
Following a multi-year international exhibition tour with stops in Amsterdam, Paris, and Bogotá, LEGENDARY showcases more than 100 original works spanning McCray’s career and cultural impact. Visitors can expect to see Cornbread’s unmistakable tag across decommissioned street signs, subway maps, postcards, mailing stickers, original canvases, and other unconventional surfaces—displayed across both floors of the gallery. The show pulls together highlights from his solo exhibition at Amsterdam’s STRAAT Museum, materials from his Paris tour and newly published book Cornbread the Legend, and even a movie set piece created for his cameo in Audrey’s Children, winner of the 2024 Tribeca X Award for Best Feature.
Cornbread’s influence reaches far beyond Philadelphia. Beginning in 1965, his non-gang-related tagging style laid the groundwork for modern graffiti and became the first recognized element of hip-hop culture. LEGENDARY traces that journey—from early street stunts that captured international attention to his later work as an advocate for public art and cultural preservation—cementing his status as a living monument within global street art history.
The exhibition also celebrates a major milestone in McCray’s career: the accessioning of his work into The Hip Hop Museum’s permanent collection ahead of the institution’s anticipated Bronx opening in Fall 2026. This recognition further underscores Cornbread’s role not only in shaping graffiti culture, but in influencing the broader evolution of hip hop worldwide.
An exclusive, ticketed exhibition preview will take place on Friday, January 16, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, offering attendees the first opportunity to collect artwork in person. Due to high demand, a reserved ticket is required for entry. A public First Friday opening reception will follow on February 6, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.
With LEGENDARY, Cornbread brings his story full circle—honoring Philadelphia’s role as the birthplace of modern graffiti while reaffirming his lasting impact on art, culture, and hip hop around the world.
