Protestors in Fishtown Wrote a “End Racism Now” On Girard Avenue!
On Tuesday evening protestors once again showed on the steps of the 26th precinct in Fishtown as a show of solidarity for the Black Lives Matter protests. However, this time the protestors were there to send a clear message. Written on Girard Avenue are the words “End Racism Now” in big block yellow letters.
If you’ve been paying attention to the rallies across the nation you may have seen a similar street mural in Washington D.C with the words “Black Lives Matter” right in front of the White House. In fact Mayor Muriel E. Bowser even changed the name of the plaza from “White House Plaza” to “Black Lives Matter Plaza.”
Philly’s mural is a direct response to an incident that took place last week when a group of vigilantes to the the streets with bats and golf clubs and shouted racial and homophobic slurs at protestors. The incident led to a petition to remove Fishtown Captain William Fisher. The petition currently has over 32,000 signatures. (See petition here.)
Although we don’t see Girard Avenue getting a name change anytime soon, this is still a cool step show of solidarity and a symbol that sends a clear signal.
