Korea Taqueria is Opening a Korean/Mexican Fusion Spot in Grays Ferry

If you love Korean food and Mexican food, why choose when eating out? Korea Taqueria which started as a food truck is opening the doors to their first brick and mortar on January 31st at 3101 Tasker Street.

Owner Alexander Sherack and Head Chef Rene originally joined forces to create their popular food truck which quickly became a hit in Philly. “I’m an Australian Korean, and Rene, a fellow Mexican food trucker from Metztitlan, Hidalgo joined forces and we really hustled last year to create a Korean-Mexican menu that delivered on flavour,” Alexander explains.

What was once a Chinese takeout spot is now home to this unique fusion of foods  “We were limited in the equipment we could use on our cart, so we took on an ambitious project in Greys Ferry (3101 Tasker St.), which saw us gut out an old Chinese takeout restaurant (the owner wanted to retire, they’d been doing it for decades) and expanded our menu. We documented some of the renovations in the form of Instagram reels and it’s started to go kinda viral locally. But with a new restaurant in place, we’re excited to serve the local community, offer delivery to a lot of south, west and Center City Philly,” Alexander adds.

Alexander who started his mini empire with just a tent and supplies from Home Depot, eventually quit his accounting job to pursue his passion. “I moved stateside and opened a food truck called PaperMill. It still operates in Philly. In early 2022, we purchased an old halal cart in Philly and turned it into Korea Taqueria food cart. For the past year we did what we knew best – taking the cart to breweries, festivals and even catered weddings,” Alexander states.

So what can guests expect?  Well, their smash-up of cultures will include a variety of familiar and new dishes alike including burritos, tacos, quesadillas, fried chicken and fried chicken sandwiches and plenty of sides to share. However, their highlight dish is their slow cooked Bulgogi Beef Birria tacos, with a Birria consume that has notes of kimchi jjigae.  Their signature Salsa Roja an Chipotle Gochujang Mayois also a crowd favorite not to mention their kimchi cheese fries with our kimchi salsa is worth trying as well.  The popular Mexican horchata drinks are also available and are vegan.  Other drinks include Watermelon Agua Fresca and Cucumber lime aqua Fresca.

“I think people really will love our weekly specials which inlcude Taco Tuesday, Wing Wednesday and Fish Taco Friday”  See full menu here https://toasttab.com/koreataqueria Hours of operation are Tuesday-Saturday 4-9pm, with extended hours in the near future.
