Kevin Durant Purchased a Stake in the Philadelphia Union!
Looks like Kevin Durant will join Lebron James by putting money into soccer. LeBron who purchased a 2% stake in the English club Liverpool FC raised some eyebrows as he invested in a sport that is outside of the United State’s big four (NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL). Now Kevin Durant sees the vision of soccer becoming increasingly popular in America and put up some money of his own. Kevin Durant purchased a minority stake in the Philadelphia Union.
Mark J. Barnes of Sports Business Daily is reporting that the Durant deal is somewhere between 1-5 %. The Washington D.C native twice tried to buy into the D.C United club but both deals fell through. Now through his company Thirty Five Ventures it looks like he has scored breaking into the soccer market
According to Sports Illustrated, Durant met with the Union back in December so this deal was a long time coming. Durant and LeBron aren’t the only NBA stars investing in soccer either. Turns out James Harden also has ownership in the MLS’s Houston Dynamo, NWSL’s Houston Dash and BBVA Compass Stadium.
The Union who have been performing very solidly in the MLS finished in third place in the Eastern Conference, with 55 points. The Union eventually went on to lose to Atlanta United F.C., 2-0, in the conference semifinals.
