Is the Best Meatball Sandwich in Port Richmond? Romano’s Meatballs Makes a Case!
There has never been a dispute on where to find the best meatballs in Philly because they have always been found South of Market. The rich history of the Italian culture in South Philly has produced some of the finest Italian eateries in not just the city but in the region. However, as restauranteurs started to spread their wings, other neighborhoods in Philly began to experience that South Philly goodness. Case in point is the traditionally Polish neighborhood of Port Richmond. Paul Reitenouer and wife Paula Romano Reitenouer opened the doors to Romano’s Meatballs & Co this past July and since then, they have been serving up some of the best homemade meatball sandwiches.
Located in the heart of the Port Richmond at 3136 Richmond St., Romano’s occupies a stretch of road that has been the home of iconic Polish markets and eateries for decades. What really makes this quaint shop stand out is its boutique menu, which has just 6 sandwiches and 2 dishes! But as the saying goes it’s all about quality not quantity.
The meatballs at this joint are right up there with the best of them, giving guests that traditional South Philly flair right in Port Richmond. For those looking for that added authentic South Philly feel, Romano’s Meatballs also serves up a damn good cannoli. So if you’re looking to see what the hoopla is for yourself, take note that their hours are from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. (or sellout) Tuesday to Saturday.
