By the End of the Year You’ll be Able to Use Your Smartphone to Pay Your SEPTA Fare!
After countless times of having to pay for a new SEPTA KEY card after losing it, the news of mobile pay is great news. SEPTA has now confirmed that they are in the process of upgrading to contactless payment systems on trolleys, buses and stations to allow riders to use their smartphones to pay their SEPTA fares.
In total over 4,000 fare validators will be upgraded to accept Google Pay and Apple Pay. For riders that wish to stick with the current system of KEY cards, SEPTA will still continue to use that method as well. The mobile payment system is one way SEPTA is looking to improve the health and safety of its transit system.
The upgrades are expected to be completed before the year is out. As a means to beta test the program, SEPTA will only use mobile payments for single trips then eventually roll out to full service including TransPasses.
