Tutu Mary’s is Hosting Onolicious Pop Ups at Hale & True and Tattooed Mom Featuring Plant Based Hawaiian Food

Mary Pregill Pimento aka Tutu Mary was born in Hawaii in 1905 to immigrant parents from another island chain, Madeira, off the northwest coast of Africa. Tutu Mary grew up working on a sugar plantation, married and had 13 children (11 girls & 2 boys). After the sudden loss of her husband she raised her family as a single mom. She cooked delicious & nutritious meals with influences from her Portuguese culture as well as the food of her Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino and American friends and neighbors.  This is where the pop-up Tutu Mary’s gets its name from and honors her legacy through the food it serves.

Tutu Mary’s was created during the pandemic when Tattooed Mom (530 South St.)  founder Robert Perry had been thinking about plant based riffs on Hawaii’s soul food classics for a while (think musubi, plate lunch, sandos & more) – and the downtime at TMoms he allowed chefs Anthony Kosiakowski & Ryan Pasquale to give life to the Tutu Mary’s menu. “Since then we’ve been able to share the love for the island culture Robert grew up with through monthly plant based pop ups at our home base Tattooed Mom as well as a residency at our neighborhood cider room Hale & True. Our chef Anthony Kosiakowski is always on the look out for new ways we can spotlight the diverse food cultures of Hawaii though plant based versions of the classics,” Robert states.

“We’re excited to share our love for island soul food with a plant based twist at our upcoming pop ups at Hale & True and Tattooed Mom in April and May as well as the Philly Veg Fest in June. You can expect onolicious snacks, sandos, plate lunch and more including our signature vegan teriyaki spam & mac salad musubi,” Robert added.
