The City Will Place a Permanent Harriet Tubman Statue in Front of City Hall

Back on January 11th the city unveiled a 9 ft. Harriet Tubman statue at the North side of City Hall to rave reviews.  The installation which was created by Wesley Wofford is scheduled to stop at various locations along the underground railroad.  Now it looks like the city is looking to make Harriet’s stay permanent.

In a public announcement, the city commissioned for a new sculpture to be built and placed at City Hall to honor the historic abolitionist. Wesley Wofford will once again be tapped to create the statue and will be larger than the pervious one.

Mayor Jim Kenney stated, “This sculpture will represent the values of activism, heroism, equality, resilience and more that we want inspiring all who visit City Hall.”  In addition to the statue the House of Representatives are looking to introduce legislation that will make March 10th a federal holiday in honor of Tubman.

The current statue which was previously at Cape May and Haverstraw (NY) will remain at City Hall until March 31st then it will be on display at its next stop in White Plains, New York.
