After a couple of postponed dates, the city has now set a new date for indoor dining in Philly.  While the rest of the state has already been enjoying the comforts of being indoor away from inclement weather, Philadelphians have been braving the elements.  Mayor Kenney has announced September 8th will be the new date in order to avoid the Labor Day crowds.

Mayor Kenney stated,  “We need to follow what we are being asked to do by the health department. I beg you to follow the rules.”

Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley stepped in to add restricts.  Among the restrictions are, restaurants and eateries will have to cap indoor dining at 25% capacity and each table will be capped at four occupants per table.  So large birthday or celebration dinners are not in the cards.

As for workers, servers will be mandated to keep wearing masks and or face shields in addition bar seating will not be allowed and alcohol must be served with food. Dr. Farley added. “We are asking restaurant managers to take these restrictions very seriously, and follow them.”

Farley said they decided on the date specifically to avoid Labor Day weekend crowds.

As of August 20, the Department of Public Health is allowing these venues to reopen with restrictions:

  • Bowling alleys
  • Arcades

On September 8, additional restrictions will be lifted. In addition to indoor dining, the City will allow:

  • Indoor gatherings of up to 25 people
  • Movie theaters
  • Indoor gatherings remain capped at 25 people.
