Relaxed Marijuana Laws Have Officially Gone Into Effect in Philly

The much talked about relaxed marijuana laws have officially gone into effect on Monday Oct. 20th.  Mayor Nutter who signed the bill back on Oct. 1st, looks to reduce the amount of arrests for what has been described by many as petty crime.

Although the penalties have been significantly reduced, possession of marijuana is still illegal in Philadelphia. However, from this day forward anyone caught with up to 30 grams of marijuana in the city will be slapped with a $25 dollar fine.  Those caught using marijuana in public will be given a $100 fine or opt to participate in 9 hours of community service.

The new changes stemming from this drug law is estimated to save the city a whopping $4 million dollars as well as many valuable hours of police time.
