Osteria Has Re-opened With a New Chef and Menu!

Osteria on North Broad Street has reopened for the first time since temporarily closing in December 2020. Since then, owners Michael Schulson of Schulson Collective and Chef Jeff Michaud have brought on Chef Ed Pinello (Executive Chef of Via Locusta) to subtly elevate Osteria’s highly seasonal, award-winning rustic menu.

The highlight of Chef Pinello’s new menu is the “Alla Griglia,” or “from the grill,” section. Over the mesquite- and wood-fired grill is where his large-format dishes will build deep, honest flavor as they cook to desired, ideal doneness. Dishes include: 24oz. Bone-in NY Strip with porcini rub, green onion, and tallow; Grilled Prawns with pepperonata, white bean, and lemon breadcrumb; Chicken al Mattone with pomegranate; wild arugula, and blood orange; and a 30oz. Tomahawk Pork Chop.

Osteria’s famed pizza and pasta courses continue as stars of the menu, including the popular Chicken Liver Rigatoni and Lombarda Pizza – dishes that have been on the menu for over a decade. The pizza dough, however, is a new recipe for Osteria. The mixture rests and ferments for 48 hours before hitting the board to be rolled, topped, and baked in the brick pizza oven. The result is a thinner, crisp crust, a style known as “Roman tonda.” Osteria’s renowned, extensive wine cellar and impressive cocktail list is highly complementary to the new menu as well.

In February of 2018, Michaud and Schulson partnered to acquire Osteria from URBN, and Michaud stayed on as Executive Chef. Since then, the restaurant was transformed: the interior was redesigned for the first time since the restaurant opened in 2007. The menu stuck to its rustic Italian roots while offering a more casual, accessible, and exciting dining experience at the hands of a polished service staff.

Osteria will be open for dinner every Wednesday and Thursday from 4pm to 10pm, Friday and Saturday until 11pm, and Sunday from 3pm to 9pm. Happy Hour is Wednesday through Saturday from 4pm to 6pm, and Sunday from 3pm to 5pm. In light of Philadelphia’s COVID restrictions on the hospitality industry, Osteria welcomes guests at 25% capacity indoors and under socially distant, heated tents on their attractive outdoor patio.
