Great Scott! ‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ Is Coming to Philly — Bringing the Classic Film to Life on Stage

Back to the Future: The Musical, the smash-hit Broadway and West End sensation, is set to land in Philly and will run November 18 – 30 at the Academy of Music (240 S. Broad St.). The award-winning production brings Marty McFly, Doc Brown, and the iconic DeLorean to the stage in a dazzling adaptation of the beloved 1985 film.

Based on the legendary Universal Pictures film, Back to the Future: The Musical follows high schooler Marty McFly, who accidentally travels back to 1955 in a time machine built by his eccentric friend, Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown. When his actions threaten to alter history — including the very existence of his future family — Marty must race against time to fix the past and make it home.

The production captures the heart, humor, and high-energy spirit of the original film with a state-of-the-art theatrical experience. Featuring mind-blowing special effects, thrilling choreography, and the unforgettable sight of a flying DeLorean, this musical is a nostalgia-fueled ride for longtime fans and newcomers alike.

After breaking box office records in London’s West End and earning the 2022 Olivier Award for Best New Musical, Back to the Future: The Musical has continued its success on Broadway and now embarks on a national tour. Tickets are on sale at ensembleartsphilly.org

The show features an all-star creative team led by Tony Award®–winning director John Rando (Urinetown), with a book by Bob Gale, co-writer of the original Back to the Future film trilogy, and Robert Zemeckis, the film’s Academy Award®–winning director (Forrest Gump).

The musical’s original score was composed by Alan Silvestri (Avengers: Endgame, Forrest Gump) and Glen Ballard (co-writer of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”), and it also includes fan-favorite hits from the movie soundtrack such as “The Power of Love,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Earth Angel,” and “Back in Time.”

Fans won’t want to miss Fan Night on Wednesday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m., a special themed performance that invites audiences to dress in Back to the Future–inspired costumes.

The first 500 audience members will receive an exclusive Fan Night Philadelphia poster, and special photo ops will be set up throughout the venue. Following the performance, fans can stay for a cast chat-back, where members of the production will share behind-the-scenes stories and insights into the making of the musical.

Blending nostalgia with innovation, Back to the Future: The Musical has been praised for its inventive staging, dynamic performances, and heartfelt message about courage, friendship, and the choices that shape our destiny.

With its soaring music, spectacular design, and emotional depth, the show promises an electrifying experience that will have audiences laughing, cheering, and maybe even wishing they had their own time machine.
