Your Complete Guide to Awesome Fest 2014
In case you haven’t hear by now, Awesome Fest is back for it’s 5th year! Now if you aren’t familiar with Awesome Fest let me give you the CliffsNotes. In a nutshell Awesome Fest is a city wide celebration of independent movies, classic movies, music, stand up, and art. Venues throughout the city host events which consists of screenings, concerts, and performances from June 19th through August 17th. Basically there are tons of cool things to get into during the two months this fest runs.
Some of the highlights of Awesome Fest include the free outdoor movie screenings at popular areas such as Eakins Oval, Liberty Lands, & Clark Park in University City. Whether your looking to venture out solo, with friends, or family there is basically nothing Awesome Fest does not cover. Here is the complete run down of events.

Joe and Chris are two ambitious young filmmakers looking for subjects for a reality TV show. They set out to find “Windows” – a living legend amongst gamers dedicated to Wizard’s Way, an aging online fantasy video game. Julian “Windows” Andrews turns out to be a stereotypical nerd, sharing a minuscule apartment with his best friend Barry Tubbulb. Their entire existence revolves around playing Wizard’s Way. Joe and Chris see an opportunity to exploit the gamers and further their own careers; soon they’re blatantly crossing ethical lines. Jack Black and his Electric Dynamite production company recently purchased the rights to remake WIZARD’S WAY. Black is also the Executive Producer of the original.

Elliot “White Lightning” Scott plans on becoming Canada’s first action hero with his low-budget karate epic, Blood Fight. This surreal documentary captures two years in the lives of a passionate amateur filmmaker, his supportive partner Linda, and their outrageous cast-all trying to realize their dreams. With everyone’s hopes and dreams pinned on Elliot, this comedic-drama unfolds into a shocking and complex examination of how we lie to ourselves. Winner of the Audience Award at Slamdance.

Riot on the Dance Floor: The story of Randy Now and City Gardens is a documentary from director Steve Tozzi, that features the stark and iconic photography of Thrasher Magazine’s Ken Salerno. It is told through an oral history format of in-depth interviews and archival footage, bringing to life the gritty story of one of New Jersey’s most infamous clubs and its larger than life promoter. City Gardens was a venue for underground music and during its time it traversed the entertainment spectrum; from the comedy of Henny Youngman to Nine Inch Nails, New Order to Nirvana. Riot on the Dance Floor is a journey of musical champions and underdogs and above all, the freedom and liberation of having complete creative control.

Writer and musician Nick Cave marks his 20,000th day on the planet Earth.
20,000 Days on Earth premiered at Sundance 2014, winning two awards – both the Editing and Directing Awards in World Cinema Documentary. The drama-documentary portrays a fictionalized 24 hours in the life of Nick Cave directed by Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard. The film was inspired by a calculation Nick had made in his songwriting notebook working out his time on earth. Forsyth and Pollard have taken this and from it crafted an innovative and powerful film that takes us inside Nick’s artistic process and celebrates creativity.
