Bloomsday Launches ‘Wine 101 for Everyone,’ a Three-Week Intro Course With Tastings & Light Bites
For anyone who’s ever felt intimidated by a wine list or unsure what to order at a restaurant, a new class series in Philly is looking to change that. Bloomsday (414 S. 2nd), the Headhouse Square neighborhood restaurant and bottle shop known for its approachable take on wine, is debuting “Wine 101 for Everyone,” a three-week immersive course aimed at beginners and curious enthusiasts alike.
Designed to make wine education accessible, engaging, and—most importantly—unpretentious, the series will run April 16, April 23, and April 30 from 6–8 p.m., offering guests a guided journey through the fundamentals of wine in a relaxed, social setting. Enrollment can be done via Resy.
Led by Bloomsday Beverage Director Chris Liu and Friends in Wine Owner Sande Friedman, the course is rooted in conversation, comparison, and hands-on tasting.
“This course is meant to serve as an open door to the wine world,” said Liu. “The wine industry can feel intimidating and confusing at times, but this course is designed to strip away the complexities and give attendees a base foundation of wine in a very unpretentious way.”
Each two-hour session includes a guided comparative tasting of wines from around the world, paired with light snacks and a welcoming environment that encourages questions and exploration.
The course is structured as a progressive series, with each class building on the last to give attendees a comprehensive understanding of wine—from how it’s made to how to confidently choose a bottle.
Week One – April 16: White Wines + Bubbles
Guests will dive into Winemaking 101, learning how grapes become wine and exploring the role of secondary characteristics shaped by winemakers.
Week Two – April 23: Rosé & Orange Wines
This session goes deeper into the nuances of color, production methods, and the differences between conventional and natural wines, including skin contact and extraction techniques.
Week Three – April 30: Red Wines
The final class ties it all together, covering blending, structure, and which wines are built to age.
In addition to the educational component, participants will enjoy a variety of perks throughout the series, including:
- Curated wine tastings each week
- Snacks during class
- 10% off dine-in and takeout on class nights
- A graduation certificate upon completion
- Bloomsday-branded wine key and tote
- A complimentary bottle of wine to take home
