After 25 Years The Italian Frank Rizzo Mural Will Be Removed From The Italian Market!
After 25 years of being prominently displayed in the Italian Market the Frank Rizzo mural will officially come down. Earlier this week Mayor Kenney ordered the removal of the Frank Rizzo statue which was erected in 1988.
This week the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program officially declared that they will no longer maintain the Frank Rizzo mural and would leave any restoration efforts up to the property owner. The owner of the building which the mural is painted on has now agreed to let the Mural Arts paint a new mural that will represent an image that is more inclusive. This comes off the heals of the biggest civil rights protest in modern history as the world campaigned for the Black Lives Matter movement which seeks justice for George Floyd and the end of systematic racism.
The Frank Rizzo mural is scheduled to be painted over this week but rain has postponed the work. Eventually it will become a blank canvas until the new image is decided on. “We agree it is time to replace this long-standing piece of art to begin to heal the Black community, the LGBTQ community and many others,” stated in a recent Inquirer article.
The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program has been active for over 35 years and has overseen the creation of over 3,800 art installments on Philadelphia buildings making this collective the world’s largest outdoor art gallery.
