The City Skyline Will Go Dark at Night to Protect Birds
The Philly skyline will look a lot different at night starting April 1st until May 31st. Several property owners have agreed to take part in the “Lights Out” national initiative with over 33 participating cities. Lights Out aims at preventing the unnecessary deaths of thousands of birds being blinded by the artificial lights from tall buildings.
If you remember last October many news sources covered the story when approximately 1,500 birds died after flying into buildings during their migration. In an effort to curve this issue, several buildings will go dark from midnight until 6 am. During this time span buildings will be turning off their lights in the upper floors as well as lobby and atrium areas.
The local coalition “Bird Safe Philly” will be assisting in the local efforts. Center City buildings that will go dark include One South Broad, 1515 Market, BNY Mellon Center, One Liberty Place, Two Liberty Place, Jefferson Center, Comcast Center and the Comcast Technology Center.
After the first campaign, Lights Out will look to take place again sometime late summer.
