Alvin Ailey Dance Company Kicks Off Black History Month At The Kimmel Center
The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater has played to audiences all over the world but this month they will kick off both Black History Month and their North American tour, here in Philadelphia. The company’s return to the Merriam Theater on Feb 3rd and Feb 4th will be full of inspirational performances including new works and long-standing favorites.
Given the current political climate, it’s no wonder that the program will feature works that explore the African American experience and social justice including r-Evolution, Dream., inspired by the speeches and sermons of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a three-part work Untitled America by MacArthur Genius Kyle Abraham about the impact of the prison system on African American families and original writings recorded by Tony Award winner Leslie Odom, Jr. of Hamilton fame.
Philadelphia is definitely representing when it comes to this tour. This stop serves as the Philadelphia Premiere of Alvin Ailey Dance Theater member and former PHILADANCO dancer Hope Boykin’s r-Evolution, Dream and will also include Exodus, a powerful work by acclaimed Philadelphia-based hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris.
Alvin Ailey’s must-see American masterpiece Revelations will finish off all performances. Revelations uses African-American spirituals, sermons, and gospel songs to explore both hope and despair.
