Philadelphia250 Launches Citywide ‘Block Party Bonanza’ to Support 250 Block Parties This Summer
In honor of America’s 250th birthday, Philadelphia250—a program of the Philadelphia Visitor Center—is rolling out the Block Party Bonanza, a citywide initiative designed to bring the celebration directly to neighborhoods across the city.
Presented by Comcast NBCUniversal in partnership with the City of Philadelphia, the program will support 250 block parties across all ten City Council districts, ensuring that every corner of the city has a chance to take part in this once-in-a-generation milestone.
In Philadelphia, few things capture the spirit of community like a block party. The Block Party Bonanza builds on that tradition, combining neighborhood pride with civic engagement as the city gears up for the semiquincentennial.
“Nothing brings neighbors together like a block party,” said Cherelle L. Parker. “From Overbrook to Somerton, from Cedarbrook to Port Richmond, we are making sure every neighborhood can see, feel, and be part of it. That is One Philly.”
Running throughout the summer—from May 23 through October 3, 2026—the initiative invites residents to host their own block parties, with selected blocks receiving special resources to enhance the experience.
At the core of the program are the “Life, Liberty, and Happiness” kits, designed to bring energy, education, and celebration to each participating block.
Each selected block will receive all three themed kits, along with a $250 grocery gift card from ShopRite to help cover food and refreshments.
- Life Kit (sponsored by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia)
Focused on wellness and community, featuring garden supplies, cooling gear, YMCA memberships, children’s books, and more. - Liberty Kit (sponsored by The Union League of Philadelphia)
Packed with patriotic essentials including flags, decorations, apparel, and pocket copies of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. - Happiness Kit (sponsored by KPMG)
Designed for fun, with games, sports equipment, crafts, and activities for all ages—including items from Philadelphia’s pro sports teams.
All materials are provided completely free of charge to residents.
In addition to the 250 participating blocks, 25 neighborhoods recognized through the Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee will receive upgraded Super Block Parties, sponsored by Jefferson Health.
These enhanced celebrations will feature:
- DJs and live entertainment
- Face painters and balloon artists
- Treat trucks and surprise activations
- Full event coordination by the Philadelphia250 team
Each Super Block Party will be customized in collaboration with block captains, creating a one-of-a-kind experience tailored to each neighborhood.
The Block Party Bonanza will also extend into classrooms through a partnership with the School District of Philadelphia’s Extended Day/Extended Year program. Select schools will host their own block party-style celebrations, giving students a chance to participate in the festivities during the summer session.
While many Philadelphia250 events will draw visitors from across the country, the Block Party Bonanza is intentionally local—designed to celebrate the people and neighborhoods that define the city.
“Block parties are where community comes alive,” said Kenyatta Johnson. “These celebrations reflect the very heart of our city.”
Kathryn Ott Lovell, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Visitor Center and Philadelphia250, echoed that sentiment, noting that the program is about elevating a beloved tradition while making sure every neighborhood feels included in the historic moment.
Applications are now open for residents interested in hosting a block party as part of the Block Party Bonanza.
The process remains simple:
- Apply for a standard block party permit through the City’s Streets Department
- Once approved, applicants will receive a link to apply for the Philadelphia250 program
A total of 250 blocks will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis, with an emphasis on equitable representation across the city.
