Chestnut Hill Conservancy Will Illuminate Germantown Avenue For the 8th Annual Night of Lights
The Chestnut Hill Conservancy will once again transform Germantown Avenue into a vibrant outdoor exhibition with the return of its 8th Annual Night of Lights, taking place from Friday, October 3 through Monday, October 6, 2025. The free, four-evening event will highlight local history, architecture, and community stories through large-scale archival projections and illuminated storefronts along the 8000 to 8700 blocks of Germantown Avenue.
The celebration begins with a “Flip the Switch” opening ceremony on Friday, October 3, from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. at 8708 Germantown Avenue, followed by live music, family-friendly activities, and performances from local groups including Limited Time Only (LTO), Flute of the Spirit, Rich Rudin and Lynn Riley of Maplewood Music Studio, Matteo Bofinger, Ralph Salerno, Second Story Walkup, and students of Yes! And…Collaborative Arts.
A Streetscape Exhibition of History and Community
First launched in 2017 for the Conservancy’s 50th anniversary, Night of Lights has become a signature fall event in Chestnut Hill. Each evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., six storefront windows will project curated slideshows featuring archival images and stories, each focused on a different theme:
-
Celebrating Teaching Artists – Spotlighting the creative work of Allens Lane Art Center’s teaching artists.
-
Mapping the Wissahickon – Tracing over 300 years of change in the Wissahickon Valley through historic maps and plans.
-
Friends of the Cresheim Trail – Documenting the trail’s history from rail line to community green space.
-
From Founding to Future – Exploring the Conservancy’s history of preservation, archives, and stewardship over more than five decades.
-
Stories Along the Avenue – Highlighting arts and cultural organizations from Germantown, Mt. Airy, and Chestnut Hill.
-
West Mt. Airy Neighbors Historic Preservation Initiative – Sharing recent preservation efforts in Mt. Airy.
“This year will be my first Night of Lights, and I’m especially excited to celebrate our unique mission of connecting the community to history through our archives, architecture, and conservation,” said David Gest, Executive Director of the Chestnut Hill Conservancy. “With the Flip the Switch ceremony at our headquarters, we not only tell the Avenue’s stories but also highlight our own historic building as a community resource.”
The event is supported by Lead Sponsor Chubb, along with general sponsors, projection sponsors, and dozens of local partners including the Chestnut Hill Business District, Friends of the Wissahickon, and Council Member Cindy Bass. It is also presented in partnership with DesignPhiladelphia and Archives Month Philly
