Former Private Speakeasy The Velvet Whip Announces Public Launch to Establish Itself as a Hub for High Art & Culture

A longtime private nightlife venue is stepping into the spotlight. Recently, the Velvet Whip—an exclusive private venue tucked away on Wood Street in Callowhill (319 N. 11th)—officially opened its doors to the public for year-round programming. Known for its avant-garde mix of live performance arts since 2022, the venue is preparing to expand its performance schedule, introduce a food menu, and launch a new membership program as it transforms into a cultural hub for the community.

Previously known for intimate, sold-out shows, The Velvet Whip will now offer many of its most popular performances on a weekly basis. Visitors can expect Naked Comedy, Jazzbari, and Burlesque: A Fictitious Indulgence with Frankie Fictitious every Tuesday through Thursday from 6 PM to 12 AM, Friday and Saturday from 6 PM to 1 AM, and Sundays from 4 PM to 10 PM.

The venue will also continue to host premier one-night-only events, including a special appearance this October by Babatunde Akinboboye, the acclaimed Global Hip-Hopera artist and opera singer who rose to fame with his viral 2018 performance blending Kendrick Lamar’s “HUMBLE.” with Rossini’s “Largo al factotum.”

Introducing Food & Membership Perks

The Velvet Whip will begin offering a limited snack menu, With plans to expand into a full-finger food program by end of the year.

Alongside its public launch, the venue will roll out a three-tier membership programAlly Cat, Honeybadger, and Unicorn—designed to enhance the guest experience. Members will gain access to private shows, enjoy unlimited guest privileges, and receive venue discounts for hosting their own events.

Deep Roots in Callowhill

Since opening in 2022, The Velvet Whip has staged more than 140 shows annually, drawing world-class talent such as pianist Eric Wortham (known for work with Adele and Jill Scott) and burlesque hall of famer Frankie Fictitious. The venue also created and produced Eraserhood Fest, Callowhill’s first community street festival celebrating the neighborhood’s rich creative legacy and its connection to filmmaker David Lynch.

With its public launch, The Velvet Whip aims to solidify its role as a cornerstone for high art and cultural connection in Callowhill, offering an eclectic space where community and creativity can thrive.
