The 4th Annual Washington’s Farewell Event Will Recreate Washington’s Iconic $15,000 Send-Off With Plenty of Booze, Bites, and Fun
The Independence Historical Trust is inviting history lovers to step back in time and raise a glass to America’s most legendary General at the 4th Annual Washington’s Farewell: A Constitutional Convention Send Off. Taking place for the first time at Carpenters’ Hall ( 320 Chestnut Street) , this lively evening of toasts, tastings, and Revolutionary camaraderie will reimagine the storied farewell celebration hosted for George Washington in 1787 at City Tavern, following the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention.
Hosted originally by the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry, the 1787 farewell party became one of the most famous send-offs in Philadelphia history, with a legendary bar tab totaling over 89 pounds—nearly $15,400 in today’s dollars.
The Trust will bring that celebratory spirit back to life, offering guests a curated tasting experience from some of the region’s finest purveyors, including:
-
Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey
-
Philadelphia Mead Company
-
Yards Brewing Co.
-
Manoff Market Cidery
-
Millstone Spirits
-
Spotted Horse Provisions
Colonial-style drinks will be served alongside immersive storytelling, with Tom the Grog Man returning to share 18th-century drinking traditions and tales. Guests will also encounter George Washington himself, brought to life by acclaimed reenactor Doug Thomas, who will offer remarks and mingle throughout the evening.
Proceeds from Washington’s Farewell support the work of the Independence Historical Trust, which funds preservation, education, and programming within Independence National Historical Park—home to some of the nation’s most treasured historic sites. This event is presented with support from the Pennsylvania Tourism Office as part of the city’s lead-up to America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. Registrations can me made here.
