The Sixers Want to Build Their Own Arena at Penns Landing!
The sports complex oasis in South Philly may have a void if the Sixers have their way. According to a recent story posted by CBS Philly, the Sixers have officially submitted plans to the city to build a new arena were the Blue Cross RiverRink is currently located.
Having already moved their offices across the Ben Franklin Bridge in Camden, the Sixers already have a foot out the door so to speak. The sports complex in South Philly is where you can be a 4 for 4 fan and catch all the action. In addition fans can also enjoy the popular XfinityLive! complex which sits adjacent to the stadiums as well as the up coming casino/hotel is also being built. Not to mention an eSports arena is also in the works. Needless to say it’s where all the action was suppose to be. Not any more.
The plan is to build a state-of-the-art arena that will “revitalize the area.” Aside from creating new jobs the Sixers also have plans to build a new school as well as an African American museum. Although their lease at the Wells Fargo Center doesn’t expire until 2031, the Sixers are getting a jump on things.
The Sixers commented on the breaking news by saying, “The 76ers have long enjoyed a strong relationship with Comcast-Spectacor, but the organization is exploring all options for when its lease ends at Wells Fargo Center in 2031, including a potential arena development at Penn’s Landing.”
The new arena is planned to be funded partially by a program called “Neighborhood Improvement Zone.” The Sixers have stated that no direct money form the city or taxpayer money will be used. However, the program in question does use certain state and local taxes to help pay off construction debt.
No timeline is being reported for the city’s response to the submitted plans. Stay tuned for more updates.
