The Recently Opened Fishtown Seafood Offers The Highest Quality Seafood That’s Environmentally Focused
When Bryan Szeliga started his seafood delivery service last September, it didn’t take long before business was booming. The business model quickly evolved and before he knew it, Fishtown Seafood was operating as a true retail space at 339 Belgrade.
Having been only open a week, Fishtown Seafood has quickly gained a loyal following of seafood lovers looking to not only enjoy high quality seafood but also support this environmentally minded local shop.
“The products we offer are of exceptionally high quality, with much of it being superfrozen at processing. Also, our fresh and chilled seafood products are free of chemicals added during the processing like Sodium Tripolyphosphate (common in shrimp, scallops, and whitefish) and Carbon Monoxide (common in tuna and fatty pelagic fish like yellowtail). We also do not source seafood that has been flown on an airplane. We do this because our focus is on a low carbon footprint. For example, we do not believe it makes sense to ship a ‘sustainability certified’ salmon from Chile to the USA in a Styrofoam box on an Airplane,” Szeliga states.
What started as a fly fishing hobby has spawned into a whole seafood operation. “I fell in love with fish (specifically Salmon and Steelhead) through fly fishing. When attending culinary school in Portland, Oregon, I found a significant disconnect between seafood suppliers, chefs, and the media about ‘sustainable’ wild salmon from the Pacific Northwest. I wanted to know more about the environment, salmon, and human’s role in the destruction, conservation, and rebuilding. I connected with local NGOs like CRITFIC and the Wild Salmon Center. I gained an extensive depth and breadth of knowledge about Pacific salmon through these NGO connections,” Bryan described.
So what types of products can you expect? Well, Fishtown Seafood offers an excellent variety of local and regional oysters,Salmon, King, and Sockeye. Other seafood selections include Cod, Pollock, Hake, Haddock, Monk, Halibut, Bluefin Tuna, Whiting, Squid ,Barramundi, Shrimp (Black Tiger and White) as well as plant-based seafood, Tuna/Toona, Crabcakes, fish burger and fish sticks.
“Our supply chains are short, and most of the product we source is of sashimi quality and has a market of high-end restaurants. The product is harvested and processed to ensure the product is of superior quality compared to other seafood products,” Bryan declares. His philosophy is simple, “We don’t want to sell seafood, we want people to eat seafood. We bring our customers the best quality seafood they can trust is thoughtfully sourced.”
Fishtown Seafood’s current hours of operation are Monday-Friday 2:30pm to 5:30 pm with weekend hours 10 am-noon on Saturday coming in February. Fishtown Seafood also offers special pickups for those that can only swing by outside of their normal operating hours or have COVID concerns.
