The Magic Gardens is Hosting Their Annual October Twilight in The Gardens with Live Entertainment!
On October 25th from from 7-10 pm you can catch a lively performance by Mixed People, a funky, soul fusion band with hints of rock and world music, otherwise known as new age funk at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens. Versatile musicianship, raw lyrics, and full vocal harmonies create a genuine, mixed musical experience. Mixed People is a Philadelphia-based band, founded by guitarist, Paulette Branson, in August 2012. Other band members include: Bird Williams (keytar and vocals), Pierre Nix (percussion and vocals), Terrence Jones (bass), Sunny Dee (drums), Kayla Brewer (saxophone), and Jakeya Sanders (vocals). The music is progressive, and the energy and emotion behind this band will get you dancing on your feet and singing along!
This month’s Teaching Artist is Erika Guadalupe Núñez (she/her/hers/ella), a queer immigrant, artist, and cultural organizer. Erika Guadalupe’s public work centers around creating art with members of her community, in order to highlight issues of inequality as they pertain to the immigrant rights movement. Erika Guadalupe’s personal work is inspired by her culture and upbringing and seeks to plant the semillas of home she carries with her everywhere.
For October’s activity, Erika Guadalupe will lead guests in creating papel picado designs to be formed into garlands or to be framed as single works of art. Take home your papel picado and celebrate the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muertos early!
As an added bonus, for an additional fee guests will be able to engage in tarot card readings with Special Guest Kat Hennessy! Hennessy is a Philly-based astrologer, teacher at The Philadelphia School, artist, and positive psychology practitioner. Kat practices astrology from a deep desire to celebrate the magical and powerful essential nature of each being on this planet. The human psyche and the planets and stars on our chart are similar in many ways to that seed: packed full of knowing, information, and above all POTENTIAL.
Visitors also have the chance to learn more about PMG through fun, casual mini-tours of the space and can check out Martha Clippinger: Translations in our galleries, as well as Vidas Suspendidas in our outdoor sculpture labyrinth.
Twilight in the Gardens is a BYOBBS event (Bring Your Own Booze, Blanket, and Snacks), and guests are encouraged to relax and picnic in the space. Tickets are available here.
