The Franklin Institute is Kicking-Off Pride Month With Their Next Science After Hours, “Summer Ball”

Just in time for summer and Pride Month, the Franklin Institute will hosting its next Science After Hours “Summer Ball” on Friday June 16th from 7:30 pm to 11:30 pm. The Summer Ball will feature music, dancing, live performances, flash talks, drag bingo, rooftop stargazing, and more.

This year marks the second edition of Summer Ball with this year’s focus being Self Reflect(ive)’ in celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

Featured programing includes  Drag performances by some of Philadelphia’s best, curated by local drag queen and show producer The Eric Jaffe. For those looking to feel fabulous, director and choreographer Kemar Jewel will be on-hand to teach attendees the elements of vogueing and runway during two separate lessons along with performances by Dayla Mizani and Hayden West.

Looking to cut loose on the dance floor? Well, DJ Hugo Max from Giddy UP Philly will be offering line dancing lessons. For added music and entertainment, DJ Lili St. Queer will also be in the building.

But wait, there will be even more music as DJ Drootrax will be spinning Top 40 remixes at The Dance floor in the Fels Planetarium under Full Dome visuals by Liquid Light Lab. The LGBTQIA+ Volunteer Cheerleading Organization, Philly Cheer Elite will be be brining the energy to Summer Ball with a series of performances. For a crafty experience, guests can screen print with Second State Press who have designed an exclusive design for Summer Ball.

With Summer Ball focusing on mental health and feeling good about yourself. the event will also feature guided mobility and mindfulness session with fitness professional and dancer Tiel Guarino. In addition, So Curious! Stage features a series of flash talks by local professionals who were given the prompt “Mental Health is Health.” Moderated by The Franklin Institute’s Chief Bioscientist, Jayatri Das, and in partnership with Radio KISMET, the So Curious! Stage gets its name from The Franklin Institute’s podcast, So Curious!
