The Danny Rumph Classic Basketball Tournament Returns for the 19th Year from August 1 to August 5

The Danny Rumph Classic, Philadelphia’s premier cause-driven basketball tournament presented by the Daniel E. Rumph II Foundation, is back for the 19th year from Thursday, August 1, 2024, through Monday, August 5, 2024, at the Community College of Philadelphia. There will be 18 games played to raise awareness of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) for today’s youth, and raise money for the Daniel E. Rumph II Foundation. New to the Classic this year is the Women’s Tournament, which will be held on Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4.

The Danny Rumph Classic is known for its high-level basketball and attracting the best talent of the game such as James Harden, Tyrese Maxey, Morris Twins, Jayson Tatum, Jalen Brunson, and many more throughout the years. This year the Classic has teamed up with headlining sponsors Red Bull, Foot Locker, and BODYARMOR to aid in the Daniel E. Rumph II Foundation’s efforts in bringing complimentary heart screenings and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to communities across Pennsylvania, along with CPR/AED education and training to the public.

This signature event in Philadelphia is held in honor of Danny and as a tribute to the game he and many others love. Mike Morak, founder of the Danny Rumph Classic, and a few friends started the Classic in 2006 to honor Danny’s legacy after Danny died of a heart condition in 2005 at The Mallery Recreation Center, now the Daniel E. Rumph II Recreation Center. He collapsed after a pickup game as he unknowingly suffered from a heart disease called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

“As we celebrate the 19th year of the Danny Rumph Classic, we reflect on nearly two decades of community, camaraderie, and Philly Hoops. Nothing beats spending time with great friends and family to keep Danny’s memory alive. It’s always been about more than just basketball as we honor Danny’s legacy and help to inspire the next generation of Philly hoops both on and off the court,” said Mike Morak.

Tickets for all games are available at the door with a donation.
