The Clay Studio is Hosting Their 7th Annual Clay Fest Featuring Free Clay Activities
On Saturday, August 20, The Clay Studio welcomes people of all ages for a day of creating art and muddy fun during the 7th annual Clay Fest, presented by PNC Arts Alive. This year’s celebration of clay and community is free and will take place at The Clay Studio’s new building in South Kensington (1425 N. American Street). From noon to 4 p.m., guests can participate in a number of activities, including hands-on clay projects, wheel throwing demos, a group sculpture extravaganza, artist projects, workshops, screen printing totes, and an ice cream social.
This year’s Clay Fest is highlighted by interactive artist activations that will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Join Ibrahim Said, whose work is featured in The Clay Studio’s current exhibition, Making Place Matter, as he teaches guests about Islamic patterning. Visitors can leave their mark on The Clay Studio by making a tile designed by local artist George Rodriguez that will become a permanent installation in the studio. Patrons can also drop into a group sculpting activity and turn 1,000 pounds of clay into a work of art inspired by Roberto Lugo’s new mural of Tarik Trotter.
Additional activities and events occur from noon to 2 p.m. Participants can craft clay necklaces with Nitza Walesca, finish decorating fish-inspired dishes to be glazed and fired by The Clay Studio, or try their hands at wheel throwing.
If the clay enthusiasts find themselves with a sweet tooth in the afternoon, they can enjoy cold treats provided by Weckerly’s Ice Cream from 2 to 4 p.m. Visitors can create ice cream bowls, sgraffito tiles, and clay owls from 2 to 4 p.m. Clay Fest 2022 is a rain or shine event.
