Point Breeze Will Now Have a New Pastry and Specialty Sandwich Shop!
Certified Executive Pastry Chef Chad Durkin, who was most recently director of research and product development for celebrity chef Buddy Valastro (Carlo’s Bakery) and a 2004 graduate of West Philadelphia’s The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, will open a specialty pastry shop and porchetteria in the Point Breeze/Graduate Hospital neighborhood at 2204 Washington Ave. This is a return to the neighborhood for Chef Durkin, as his new eateries are located in what was once Kermit’s Bake Shoppe, which he helped open in 2013.
For his pastry shop and cafe, named “Small Oven Pasty Shop,” Durkin creates beautiful, bite-sized pastries daily – such as eclairs, cream puffs, mousse cakes, tarts, galettes, and cookie sandwiches – available per piece or by the baker’s dozen fresh from the case. The shop has its own entrance with a display case to showcase his pastries as well as seating to allow for guests to sit and enjoy a variety of beverages from freshly brewed coffee and tea to cold beverages. Additionally, Durkin will encourage guests to BYOB.
For Porcos, his porchetteria and specialty sandwich shop operating out of the same space, equipped with its own oven and walk-up to-go window, he’ll serve traditional Italian-style whole roasted pork sandwiches like those he grew up on and he enjoyed while visiting Ariccia, a province of Rome. He’ll also offer a menu of signature sandwiches, including vegetarian and vegan options (e.g. the vegan Meaty-Ball sandwich), all served on house-baked ciabatta bread and salads. Note: guests will place their order at the outside window and can either wait outside or inside to pick up.
Porcos will be serving Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (or until they sell out) and Small Oven Pastry Shop will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
