New Nano Brewery, Humble Parlor Brewing Company Just Opened & It Features a Cozy Taproom
It’s tax season but CPA turned brewer Alex Howell isn’t just focused on spreadsheets, he’s also working on brewing some of Philly’s best new beers. Along with partner Maria Caldarise, the duo opened Humble Parlor Brewing Company (3237 Amber St. Unit 42E) last week to rave reviews.
What started off as a business selling 4-packs to go back in January has now spawned into full-fledge nano brewery featuring a public taproom. Humble Parlor produces a variety of brews including hazy IPA’s, pale ales, porters, as well has hard seltzers.
So how did a person crunching numbers turn into a brewer? “I am a CPA by trade. However, my passion is in brewing. I can’t specify a moment when I decided to open up the brewery, but working 60+ hours a week on other people’s dreams left an empty feeling that I was missing out on my own dreams.” Alex states.
“Once I turned 21 it didn’t take that long for me to discover that there is good beer in this world beyond the Keystone Lights and Natty Daddy’s I would drink when I was an underage Temple Student with no money. (can I say that I drank beer before I was 21?). Anyway, I quickly became Infatuated with the craft beer industry, and rather than searching for the best beer from the best breweries, I wanted to make it for myself. I am self-taught with the help of many books about brewing methods, water chemistry, fermentation science, etc. I just brewed as much as humanly possible (drank as many different beers as humanly possible too). This made me understand the ins and outs of brewing and it got to a point where the only difference between a home brewer like myself and a pro brewer was temperature control and a liquor license. Now I have both those things,” explains Howell
So what can guests expect from visiting Humble Parlor Brewing Company? Well the taproom is only open Saturdays 2-7 pm and features anywhere from 4-7 beers on tap. The taproom itself is 600 sq. ft and seats up to 21 guests. Located in a 1920’s old textile mill “Guests can expect to enjoy a unique craft beer drinking experience. We are in an old industrial building and it just has a humble vibe,” adds Howell adds.
