Laurel Hill Cemetery is Hosting “Flowers for the Philly Sound” Featuring DJs, a Cocktail Hour and Guest Speakers
The Laurel Hill Cemetery is looking to give the Philly sound its flowers, literally. On March 26th from 4 pm – 6pm, Laurel Hill West Conservatory (340 Belmont Ave.) will host Flowers for the Philly Sound, which will be a celebration of Philly’s soul sound as well as the permanent residents at Laurel Hill that have contributed.
The lives and music of Laurel Hill West permanent residents Teddy Pendergrass and Billy Paul are the catalysts for this public discussion about the cultural and historical importance of Philly soul music. Guests will get to know more about the famous Philly Sound that inspired generations of genres and local and national artists that followed.
Flowers for the Philly Sound will include guest speakers such as Bill Jolly who was the former music director for Teddy Pendergrass as well as longtime radio personality and the ‘Mother of Black Music Month,’ Dyana Williams. In addition Victor Jackson, an artist and Black Music City grantee will also be on-hand along with others from Philly’s music community.
The event will also include a cocktail hour and DJ set of soul classics with Philadelphia’s own John Morrison, a writer, DJ, sample-flipper and host of Culture Cypher Radio, a hip-hop radio show on NPR member station WXPN.
Tickets for non-members are $20 and can be purchased here.
