Hawaii is Offering Free Round Trip Tickets to Remote Workers To Help Stimulate Their Economy!
Even paradise has seen its fair share of misery. Hawaii which has been hit hard with the lack of tourism since the start of the pandemic is attempting to bounce back. Officials there have found a unique and enticing way to help revive their economy by offering free round trip tickets for remote workers in what they are calling the “Movers and Shakas” program.
How does this help them? Well, Hawaiian officials realize that the pandemic not only normalized working remotely but also ushered in a large wave of companies starting to make the shift. So if you are able to work remotely, why not work in paradise? The plan is simple, Hawaii is offering free round trip tickets to Oahu to out-of-state remote workers who want to live and work there while contributing to the state’s economy on a temporary basis.
The Movers and Shakas temporary residence program was launched in collaboration with schools and businesses. The deadline for the first wave of remote workers has been set for December 15th. Only fifty will be chosen for the first batch then the program will transition and accept applicants on a rolling basis. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age, be able to move within a month and spend at least 30 days in Hawaii.
In a recent interview with CNN the group’s founder Jason Higa stated, “Movers and Shakas is a small step towards economic recovery and diversifying our economy. The pandemic has normalized remote work for the foreseeable future, so we believe this situation presents an opportunity for local residents to return home, and for out of state professionals to experience Hawaii, not as tourists, but as contributing members of our community.” Anyone interested can visit MoversandShakas.org.
