End of an Era: WIP Has Announced that Wing Bowl Has Come to and End
After 26 years, Philly’s most egregious yet beloved homegrown event has come to an end. That’s right, Wing Bowl is no more. This morning, radio station WIP announced that there will be no more Wing Bowl.
For those not in the know, Wing Bowl was a wing eating competition that was created to give the city a “championship” or sorts because the Eagles have never won a Super Bowl. However, now that the birds are newly crowned champs WIP has decided that Wing Bowl is not needed.
Over the course of over two decades the scenes at Wing Bowl were nothing short of eye popping. From scantily clad strippers on over the top floats, to competitors throwing up, cheating scandals and more. Basically we’ve seen it all. Perhaps the most controversial news to come Wing Bowl was when El Wingador tried to do his best George Jung impression and got locked up. He then made a return to the event years later.
I am not going to lie, even though Wing Bowl could be described as a tasteless and classless event, it will be missed. It was probably the most Philadelphia thing the city ever created. Where else will you see an arena full of folks at 6 am watching pro-eaters down hot wings? RIP Wing Bowl. We wonder what PJ Whelihan’s will do with all those excess wings. (jk)
