Philly is officially back on the cruise map as Norwegian Cruise Line launches service from the city for the first time in more than 15 years.
The milestone moment arrived on Thursday, April 16, when the Norwegian Jewel docked at the newly developed PhilaPort cruise terminal—marking the return of large-scale passenger cruising to the region.
Built on a 16-acre site near Philadelphia International Airport, the new terminal represents a major expansion for PhilaPort as it diversifies beyond cargo operations.
Officials say the launch signals a broader vision for the port as both a logistics hub and a gateway for international travel.
“This is a defining moment for the Port of Philadelphia,” said Executive Director Jeff Theobald, noting the economic and tourism impact expected from the new service.
With the Norwegian Jewel now operating out of Philadelphia, travelers can look forward to cruise itineraries to Bermuda and other destinations, offering a new option for regional departures without the need to travel to larger East Coast ports.
The addition is expected to boost tourism, create jobs, and position Philadelphia as a competitive player in the cruise industry once again.
To mark the occasion, PhilaPort and Norwegian Cruise Line hosted a special onboard ceremony welcoming a group of officials and stakeholders, including:
