Cloud Cups Gelato & Darnel’s Cakes Will Be Opening a Joint Storefront in Fishtown This Week
What do you get when you combine an award winning gelato business with an award winning bakery? Heaven of course. This Friday, that’s exactly what’s happening when Cloud Cups Gelato and Darnel’s Cakes open the doors to their new joint storefront in Fishtown. The location will be the same spot that Cloud Cups Gelato first occupied in 2022 and closed for renovations and to open a flagship store in the Harrowgate neighborhood.
Now Cloud Cups owner Galen Thomas is returning to the same storefront at 2311 Frankford Ave. but this time he’s bringing fellow desert star Kyle Cuffie-Scott of Darnel’s Cakes for a one-of-a-kind desert experience. The grand opening is slated for Friday November 22nd at 3 pm. “We will be opening for the winter with our Winter Wonderland pop up at Cloud Cups Fishtown. It’s called, “Let It Snow” at Cloud Cups. We want to provide an experience of our holiday flavors and specialty items to make it feel like it’s snowing Cloud Cups,” Galen states.
So how did this partnership come about? “Galen and I met with the help of the late Charisse McGill because she had a knack for bringing like-minded people together. We have two stellar dessert businesses that naturally work well together. Since meeting, we brainstormed many ideas to create fun gelato flavors at his shop. However, the partnership blossomed once this new location became available,” Kyle explains.
For the Friday reopening Galen and his team will be offering some seasonal treats with some holiday flair. “We will have all of our special holiday flavors like Candy Cane and Egg Nog along with Hot Chocolate Affogatos,” Galen adds.
On the cake side of things, Darnel’s Cakes will be debuting new menu items including Sundaes with your choice of Cloud Cups Gelato atop a Darnel’s Cookie or Brownie, make-your-own Cookie gelato sandwiches, D’s Cloud Cakes which includes a cake and gelato sandwich dipped in sprinkles or toasted cake crumbs, and D’s Cloud Birthday Cakes which will be an 8 inch round cake with two layers of Darnel’s Cakes and two layers of silky Cloud Cups Gelato that is iced and decorated for a frozen birthday treat.
As for returning to his original brick and mortar location, Galen is more than excited to be back in the neighborhood stating, “It feels amazing! We love the Fishtown neighborhood and getting to see our customers there. Even better that it’s in a newly renovated space.”
“This partnership means everything because it’s rare that two Black dessert chefs can create delicious products that Philly can enjoy. Individually, Galen and I have the talent, technique, and tenacity to thrive in the food business. Together, this “cool” venture will create some tasty opportunities for years to come,” Kyle adds.
The Fishtown hours of operation will be Friday 3pm to 8pm, Saturday and Sunday 1pm to 8pm.
